Post Fin Size for 195L Longboard
Hi. I'm a new member here writing from a city just north of Boston, MA USA. I was very happy to learn of this site.

My board is an F2 Phoenix 340 and is 11'2" long (below is a link to a picture of the board)

I currently have a 40cm fin but was told that a 54cm fin would be more appropriate. I sail in all conditions with using 3 different sails. My weight is 215lbs.

Could anyone recommend the best size fin? Would switching to a 54cm fin make much of a difference in light wind?

Thanks.

hi

fellow phoenix 340 owner just thought i'd touch base and say hi as these are rare boards over here in Australia.

although I can't help in your question as I havent sailed mine yet..this season...I will

I bought mine when unsuccessfully I tried to locate a phoenix 320, instead I located a Fanatic Bee 317 new here which pretty much embodies the phoenix 320 design..

later I found my phoenix 340 and had to have it even though its design philosophy is different to the 320..

nice board...looking forward to sailing it as I have sold off my F2 lightning..I think I am regretting that decision though.Hoping the 40 will heal those regrets..mainly got it because it is shorter and lighter.

your board looks very nice condition...I love its design and profile..

cheers rusty

Hi Rusty,
Thanks for responding to my post. Regarding the F2 320, I'm glad you mentioned that there is a difference in design philosophy. I have been considering a 320 purchase at some point.

My 340 has been great.

yes mate

the 320 and my fanatic bee 317 are more transitional in a way

i still consider them a longboard but they are the last of the allround board before the wideboards came in

i think if wide boards hadnt come in, these two would be the all rounder boards
for learing thru to longboarding.

a great design..

I alter my sailing between my fanatic bee 317 and my Mistral Prodigy..which is the only wideboard I consider embodies the look and philosophy of the long boards

both I enjoy riding...

although I still have many longboards..these shorter phoenix 340's I think suit better...light weight and easier handling..

still I am going to regret the lightning I sold

Rusty,
Thanks. Probably within a year I'll be in the marker for a shorter board. Over the past month I've seen a couple Lightenings for sail. Can you tell me some good points about the board? I too favor the pre-wide board designs.

In the end, the retailer that sold me the fin contacted me and offered me a full refund including shipping both ways.

He contacted True Ames directly and decided that it wasn't the proper fin for me and my board.

Thanks for helping out.

First post here - great forum.
For what it's worth, I've been sailing my Phoenix 320 since 2001 using a 46cm MFC fin with 7.0 and 8.5 cambered sails - works like a champ. At 160lb I'm a bit lighter than the original poster, so thinking that the bigger fin on a bigger board with a bigger rider might work out okay. What was the problem?
Regards, rickp
