So I hear from the guys from Finland that Severne Sails are looking to make a raceboard specific sail. I can not find any info about it on there web site. Does anyone know any more or have any pictures? I guess the question is if they are will it be a real raceboard sail or just a converted freeride sail. That is will it have light wind performance as well as adjustability for higher winds.

Hi Pat! I believe that Severne RB sail is the same sail that I have, but it is sold to public under Starboard name. It has similarities with Glide 7,5m2, but is not the same sail.
You´ll find pictures on our webpage.
I rigged the sail today with Technofiber 520 imcs 33 cc mast and sail looks really good with it. Unfortunately the mast belongs to Patrik Pollak´s brother in law and he wants to use it himself and I have to settle with Severne mast that manufacturer recomends.
Patrik recomended this Technofiber sail.
I´ll put some new pictures of sail taken today, on our webpages as soon as possible.

Pat,

Those sails actually arrived here in Argentina with the Starboard branding for the '07 Worlds. I believe they were designed by Tiesda You. It's 9.5 m2 and has a Raceboard "cut". The name/model of the sail is something like "V2SigmaMax" or "square root of sigma max". You can see that on the photos I'm attaching here. There are some more pics on the referenced site. Regards,

What masts were they using?
I have tested that sail with several masts and the sail seems to be OK with Technofiber, North Sails platinum and of course with Severne masts. Severne Blue line both 520 and 540 seems Ok and also Red line 530.
The only mast so far the sail didn´t work with, was Neil Pryde 520.

Ironically, I guess most of them were rigged on old 520 NP's or X6 NP's, given that it is what we mostly get down here. Regards,

Rigged with NP ´s 520 mast the *board sail left funny shaped barrel underneath the boom and cambers didn´t rotate due to NP´s larger diameter, how could they sail with it?

Quite unbelievable sail, I have to say, it seems to work with anything from hi-tec 100% carbon masts to old lamp posts.
My son is using the sail with 520 Severne blueline at moment at Lake Garda, and he thinks this is the best combination.

There´s four cams and the idea is to get the top to twist or to create same kind of effect without hard downhaul tension. This Starboard sail is very easy to trim and the downhaul is possible to set with just bare hands, unlike Formula sails that always need somekind of tools to trim.
I´ll write more about this sail after I get full report from my boys and Patrik Pollak, they were training together at Lake Garda and just got back home.

how do you thing such a specialized longboard sail would perform with a Formula board in the lowest wind range (8-12kt)?

On the other side, I guess in the medium wind range (12-18kt) this RB sail with a formula board it won't be as fast as a specialized FW sail, or give poor angles, but I am worried more about it being handful or difficult to control. I imagin this RB sail can be downhauled in such a way to make it controllable in medium winds, but would it be true with a FW board?

I am asking because I am thinking of buying a big rig. Now it would be for my Kona, but having in mind that in one year or so I would like to buy a 2nd hand formula for the marginal 8-12kt flat water days.

The other way round, that is: having a 9.8 FW rig for a longboard like kona does make more sense?

Just another option, i use a V8 10.6

It has been used easily on a formula in the wind range you indicate and then with much less downhaul works pretty well on a long board in most wind ranges.

I think other big 2 or 3 cam sails such as Severne overdrive, GTX etc would also work ok.

I see, a big freerace sail, which can be used for formula, can be trim underdownhauled to achieve the tight leech and fuller profile that a longboard needs. Ok, that's also a good option.

Anyone with ideas regarding the LB sail for lightwind formula?
