Post WINDSURFER@ boom
I love my "Regatta" Windsurfer@ with its slide in daggerboard and wedge mastbase, however the only real
problem I have with the design is the tie on boom. It would be good for cracking nuts, but I do not like
snapping the now hard to get blue speghetti mast....Has there been an upgrade to some sort of Windsurfer@ boom with a clamp on head? Are most sailors using other modern booms? Are sailors still tying on their booms?
I used to have a North boom with a fully articulating head that pivoted 360 degrees, and is sure was nice to just pull out the battons and roll up the Regatta sail on the mast, pull on a sail/mast sock cover, pivot the boom and tie them up on the roof racks....Easy rigging/derigging!...So how are other Windsurfer owners fastening their booms? ??? I seldom can see on u-tube or other pictures how the front end of the boom is fastened.

Thanks,
Mike Harrison

Post Re: WINDSURFER@ boom
I personally reinforce my masts with fiberglass - cloth and resin. At the foot for railrides and freestyle and at the boom attachment, so I can pinch the boom as hard as I want without fear of breaking the mast. I have for 20 years now.

I put 6 layers at mast foot and 4-5 at boom height. Never breaks anymore, for little additional weight.

'coz you're right: both the original longitudinal light blue fiberglass make and the spiral darker blue get weak after 20 years. And I much prefer the feel of those older masts for those sails than new, stiffer masts.

As to the booms, unless you do a lot of freestyle and you need the consistent, original feel, then any modern long boom will do just as well.

Cheers,
P.

Thanks Pierrec45.

I will have to reinforce my blue mast for when I want to get that original feel. I have all the parts, but I have "upgraded?" the rig. After not sailing for 10 years, (and need to get back into the groove). 8) I am trying to make things easiest as possible.
UPGRADES
Windsurfer = original skinny mast ---got Hot Sails Maui Hotrod 460 RDM.
Windsurfer = Dacron sails -------------got Hot Sails Maui Superfreak 7.0 (Dacron Sail) fits HSM Hotrod 460
Windsurfer = narrow boom-------------got Hot Sails Maui Supermodel boom....(a narrow carbon boom)
Also ORIGINAL WINDSURFER @ UPGRADES
Windsurfer = High Wind Daggerboard .. This was my first purchase that really made a difference in high winds.
Windsurfer = ADJUSTABLE WEDGE for the Mast Base Slot....This mast base has a knob you turn to widen the wedge and make the base very tight, or very easy to remove! Got photo of adjustable mast base if yah want to see.
